Paying in Chengdu
China runs on QR codes. Set up Alipay first — it solves 90% of problems.
Set up Alipay (5 minutes)
- ●Download Alipay, sign up with your own phone number (foreign numbers work).
- ●Verify identity with your passport (Account → Settings → Identity).
- ●Add a Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Diners or Discover card. Payments under ¥200 have no fee; above ¥200 a ~3% fee applies.
- ●To pay: open Alipay → 'Pay' to show your code, or 'Scan' the shop's QR code and enter the amount.
When payment fails
- ●'Card not supported' — some prepaid, debit or business cards are refused. Try another card or WeChat Pay.
- ●Account locked after a big payment — risk control. Do small payments first; wait 24h or contact Alipay in-app support (English).
- ●Bank blocks the charge — call your bank or approve in their app; tell them you are in China.
- ●Still stuck? Pay cash, or ask the shop 'Kěyǐ shuā kǎ ma?' (Can I pay by card?). Big malls, hotels and Trip.com accept foreign cards.
Cash
- ●Bank of China, ICBC and other big-bank ATMs accept foreign cards. Withdraw in the airport on arrival.
- ●All shops must accept cash by law, but small stalls may lack change — carry ¥10 / ¥20 notes.
